WWDC Thoughts

Posted By: Katie

I’m sure you all know by now Apple had some pretty big announcements in their WWDC Keynote this week. This was the first keynote in a long time that had some big surprises and I was absolutely thrilled. We all love the rumor sites, but kinda like a kid on Christmas morning, I like to be surprised every now and again.

The updates to the MacBook Pros were most welcome as you all know I love my 13” form factor but miss the FireWire and other Pro features. So that has prompted me to upgrade. I was surprised to see that Snow Leopard’s cost would be so affordable for current Leopard and am looking forward to getting an even faster Mac in September when it releases. I was also shocked to see the iPhone 3G S and the iPhone 3.0 Software Update will be out next week, I was expecting more of a July release date.

Apple has recently
posted a stream of the event on their website and I anticipate they’ll be posting a downloadable podcast version soon.

If you’re interested in my reaction to the announcements, check out the most recent
Mac Roundtable Podcast, Episode 64 where I chat with Chuck Joiner, David Sparks, Bart Buschots and Steve Stanger about the announcements.

[Edit:]
As I mentioned before, these MacBook Pro Upgrades were enough to push me over the edge. I mentioned on Twitter that I was looking to sell my current Black Macbook and have gotten a lot of tweets asking for information. I’m pleased to report the MacBook is sold and on it’s way to a happy new home next week.

Now, if only I could get Apple to ship my MacBook Pro. I learned a valuable lesson with this recent purchase. I picked the high end 13” stock configuration. The only additions I made was to add the DVI and VGA adapters since the new display port standard means my current adapters won’t work. Apparently by adding these items it made my MacBook Pro a “special Build to Order” machine” which increased the normal ship time from 24 hours to three days! Had I just put the MacBook in my cart as is, I could have then gone back into the regular store and bought the silly adapters for the same cost and likely had my MacBook Pro in time for the weekend.

Oh well, live and learn. I still can’t wait!

Hulu Desktop arrives but is it really the solution we all wanted? Summer has just started but Apple wants you to take a Mac back to school and is offering free iPods. Steve makes an appearance at the Apple campus and Katie and Corey have some conspiracy theories as to what he may be doing there. It remains to be seen whether he will make an appearance at WWDC. Lots of software updates as well as a giveaway of Shovebox, one of Corey’s favorite applications. Listen for more details on how to enter and win. (Running time: 0:44:23)

New Project: Mac Power Users Podcast

So you may have heard the news, I’ve officially lost all sense of sanity and am starting yet another podcast.

If you don’t read David Sparks MacSparky blog, you should. David is a fellow Mac Geek and member of the Mac Roundtable podcast. David and I first met, in person, at Macworld 2008 and became fast friends. Over the years and months we have been talking quite a bit about how to be more productive with our Macs and how we use them not only for play, but for work as well. Perhaps it’s the legal training, but David and I think a lot of like. We’re both more than a little a little obsessive about our Macs, staying organized, and being productive. We started kicking around the idea of doing a podcast but agreed that the Mac podcast space was already filled with really great podcasters and shows that we wouldn’t start yet another Mac podcast unless we truly felt we could add something new to the forum.

After much thought, we decided that we wanted to produce a show where we take one topic and go in-depth. Our first episode, to be published in the next week, will focus on email. Managing it, organizing it, creating a workflow, and using it productivley. Why start with email? Because it’s not as simple as you think, and it’s something everyone can relate to. We’ll probably add other segments over time and we’ll take questions and have on special guests and experts from time to time. But let’s be clear, this is not a news and rumors show. Sure, from time to time we will cover timely topics but we’re going to try to keep the focus on the show of really “going deep” on one topic.

“Episode Zero” is now posted to iTunes and you can subscribe to the podcast here. The first show is a 5 minute introduction designed to setup the feed and make sure everything works before we throw the real content out there. You can expect our first show to post within a week and our plan is to post about 2 shows a month to start.

Now, let me make one thing very clear. This new project is in addition to all the things I regularly do here at the MacCore and over at the Mac Roundtable. Corey and I have setup a recording schedule and regularly brainstorm ideas for future MacCore episodes. Mac Power Users will not take away from The MacCore Podcast that Corey and I do together. In fact, I anticipate having to do some more in-depth research and exposing myself to new ideas and ways of working when doing the Mac Power Users Podcast so I hope that these experiences and knowledge will only serve to enhance what we do here at the MacCore.
